Historically, Sri Lanka has evidence of human colonization dating back to about 34,000 years ago. Also, there're several kingdoms since 377 BCE. Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa are the major kingdoms of Sri Lanka.
In 1505 the Portuguese commander Lawrence de Almeida arrived in Sri Lanka. After some political dramas & wars Portuguese ruled over the coastal areas.
In 1638 the Dutch came & they fought with Portuguese according to their agreement with Rajasinghe II (King of Kandy). By 1660 Dutch ruled the country except the kingdom of Kandy.
In 1815, the British invaded the kingdom of Kandy and Sri Lanka became a colony.
Sri Lankan culture has mainly influenced by Theravada Buddhism passed from India around 247 BCE (In the ages of the Anuradhapura Kingdom). Visual & performing arts also largely influenced by Buddhism. This cultural awakening gifted us World heritage sites such as Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, etc.
Also Sri Lankan culture influence with other religions such as Hinduism, Christianity, Islam. As the result of invasion of Portuguese, Dutch and the British some European cultural values also mixed with Sri Lankan culture.
Most importantly hospitality is one of the well recognized characteristics of Sri Lankan culture that make Sri Lankan's friendly nation in the world.
